Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering since September 1st, 2007. Head of the Chemical Engineering Department since November 28th, 2020. DEA in “Sciences des Matériaux” from Université de Caen (France) in 1987. Ph.D. in Chemistry, speciality Chemical Engineering from the Universitat Rovira I Virgili, Tarragona (Spain) in 1993. He has spent several extended postdoctoral visits in laboratory GEPEA, Université de Nantes (France), working in electrochemical engineering and bioengineering. He joined the technology transfer centre of URV where he held the position of project engineer during three years. Researcher of the Spanish programme Ramón y Cajal between 2003 and 2007. His research areas of interest are: recovery and production of energy vectors and high-value molecules from fresh and residual biomass: production of biogas from sewage sludge and/or microalgae by anaerobic digestion or codigestion; production of biocrude by hydrothermal liquefaction of microalgae, manure or sewage sludge; extraction and utilisation of valuable materials from biomass as sewage sludge and/or microalgae (lipids, protein, cellulose, enzymes); development of new extraction schemes with ionic liquids or deep eutectic solvents (municipal and industrial sludge, agriculture residues, fresh and residual microalgae and finally, insects); production of high value chemicals as levulinic acid (from cellulose extracted from sewage sludge or agriculture residues) or biodiesel (from lipids extracted from sewage sludge, microalgae or insects). He has participated in 7 U.E. contracts, the last one in the FP6 as manager (FP6-018525). He has also participated in 30 competitive Spanish research projects and in 65 R & D contracts of special relevance with companies and/or public administrations, 35 of them as principal investigator. He has supervised 8 PhD students, 2 Post-Doctoral students, 10 Master-thesis students and more than 40 under-graduated students from several countries (Spain, France, Egypt, Malaysia, Yemen, Lebanon, etc.).
